My name is Mark G. Farmer. I have a combination of two passions, weather and photography. I was born on Galveston Island, Texas, talk about destiny. My first memory was when I was just about to turn five years old. On May 8, 1976 a 600 foot wide F3 tornado traveled 13 miles right through the neighborhood where I lived in Alvin, Texas. Seeing that tornado and the destruction it left behind left an indelible mark. My fascination with weather started then and there. In July 1979 Tropical Storm Claudette dumped 45 inches of rain on Alvin including the highest one day total of 42 inches. This remains the twenty four hour rainfall record for any location in the United States.
Being in the wrong place at the wrong time as most people would see it. Just by chance I was traveling via Greyhound Bus on Interstate 35 when the Andover Kansas F5 tornado passed right in front of our bus. I was sitting right behind the bus driver who was creeping along at a slow pace because of the baseball size hail. To our amazement a tractor trailer was blown off the over pass in front of us onto the other side of I-35 next to us. In August of 1992, I took leave from my Marine Corps Base in North Carolina to travel south to witness Hurricane Andrew first hand. I’ve been in seventeen hurricanes from Cat 1 to Cat 5 and seen more than twenty tornados from EF0 to EF5. My fascination with extreme weather has only grown.
My newest passion – photography started several years ago when I purchased the first digital camera for my wife (wink wink – cough cough). I have always been an artist. I drew pencil drawings as a small child through high school where I picked up painting and then later sculpting, never really finding my niche. The digital camera and its instant gratification appealed to the artistic side of me that had nearly disappeared under a blanket of work and day to day life. The rewards of photography are very satisfying to the soul. Nature and wildlife photography can be especially enriching. Living in Southwest Florida enables me to live in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world – The Everglades. This is truly one of the most remarkable and beautiful places in the world.
By starting Mark G. Farmer Photography in 2008 I hope to share my images. By starting this business, I hope to bring my unique portraiture talents to those customers who would benefit from my specialized approach to photography.
